The Charterhouse of Seville
La Cartuja de Sevilla-Pickman is a ceramic company specializing in fine earthenware and founded by the British Charles (Carlos) Pickman in the monastery of La Cartuja in Seville in the 19th century. It currently has its factory in Salteras, province of Seville.
William (Guillermo) Pickman, Carlos's brother, settled in Cádiz in 1810, from where he sold foreign earthenware and glassware to all of Spain, and years later, Carlos was the one who requested the Carthusian monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas in Seville to build the pottery factory on it.
The Royal Order of April 4, 1839 granted the building to Carlos and on January 1, 1841 the first oven was put into operation. In 1849 the factory already had 22 ovens and about 500 workers.
Today, La Cartuja de Sevilla manufactures one of the most symbolic and pedigree tableware in all of Spain and is always a timeless icon on any table.
